There are tons of people trying to create blogs that will go viral and create a storm of attention for your mom, your dad, even your little sister who just turned 13 and wants to use Tumblr to express herself. There is a ton of advice out there on blogging that contradicts itself, and when you’re just starting out, it can be very confusing. This list compiles some of the most egregious blogging myths and how to overcome some of the stigma that goes into each one.
Myth #1: Blogging is Easy
Most people understand that blogging is like a second job or even a first job if you are really trying to make an income. While it may be easy to set up your own site with all of the different site builders out there, if you are serious about starting and managing a blog, it takes a lot of hard work. You have to have a passion for the subject of your blog, but you also have to know how to write content and optimize it for search engines. There are a ton of benefits to blogging, but if you don’t focus on creating a great topic and looking for unique subject matter with every post, you won’t get any visitors who want to keep reading your blog.
Myth #2: The Blog Tree is Made of Money
It’s not easy to make money blogging. The market is flooded, but it’s also a problem that everyone out there claims to be an expert. Few actually are experts in their areas. Blogger aficionados may claim that they make thousands of dollars every day, but it’s unlikely. Top blogs like The Huffington Post and PerezHilton make six figures every month, but they are rare and they’ve been blogging for years and have cultivated a reputation. It takes patience to start earning monthly incomes you can live with a blog.
Myth #3: Just Set Up a Blog to Earn 6 Figures
In addition, you probably won’t ever make six figures with your blog especially if you don’t have a great blog design. There are a variety of free blogs out there, but they aren’t going to bring in traffic like a well-designed, responsive blog that is specific to your subject matter. There are fewer opportunities to make a lot of money with your blog unless you are a company and have a ton of funnels to your blog that are constantly being pushed through SEO and social media. The key to earning big money is to do more than set up a basic site. You have to be a directory for information and monetize your site in a variety of ways. It also helps to post content every day and have a large archive of articles that people want to click on and read every day.
Myth #4: You Can’t Make Any Money Blogging
Even though it’s difficult to make money blogging, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible. You can make a few hundred extra per month if you really push it and post daily, and you can build on that. In a few years, if you cultivate an audience and get popular on social media, it may even be enough to add a store and allowing your blog to earn income for you passively. If you invest your time and work into your blog as a business, it will eventually pay off.
Myth #5: Quit Your Job and Just Blog
You don’t have to post every day to make a blog successful, but you should be posting interesting and unique content as much as possible. If you start posting every day, you likely won’t have high quality posts or you may even go through writer’s block and give up. You can get guest posts to help you or even just post twice a week. You should post on specific days and always make those posts count to your blog stand out.
